The valley between effort and evidence
There is always a stretch where the work is real and the results are not yet visible. Most people quit inside that valley and label it a strategy change. The compounding never begins because it is never allowed to run.
Replace motivation with structure
Discipline that depends on feeling is a coin toss. Discipline built into structure survives bad weeks.
- Commit to a review date, not an outcome date
- Track inputs you control weekly; review outcomes quarterly
- Make the decision once, then remove the daily choice
- Have one person who will ask you about it whether or not you raise it
Choose long games with compounding payoffs
Reputation, ownership, distribution and mastery all compound. Trading time for fees does not. When two options tie on money, take the one that still pays in year five.
Sequence your rewards
Delayed reward does not mean joyless work. Build small, honest milestones inside a long horizon so the discipline is sustainable rather than heroic.
Name one decision you will not revisit for twelve months, write the review date down, and stop renegotiating it weekly.
